Face masks have proven to be practical not only in clinics and surgeries. After all, they offer ideal protection against pathogens and fine dust, among other things. Compared to conventional face masks, FFP3 masks must fulfil special standards in order to be sold under this label. They are also characterised by a close-fitting shape and first-class wearing comfort.
Never before has wearing a mask that protects against pathogens been so important. Buy your FFP3 standard face masks in our shop now. We offer a wide range of colours and designs.
What are FFP3 masks?
FFP3 masks promise good protection against invisible dangers such as bacteria, viruses or fungal spores. However, they are not only used in the medical sector. They also demonstrate their advantages in the trades and protect against the smallest particles when working with wood, welding or demolition work. Thanks to their workmanship and strong material, they filter all kinds of pollutants from the air. The FFP3 mask impresses with 99 per cent reliability.
FFP is the abbreviation for "Filtering Face Piece", which literally means "filtering face piece". However, it is much more than just a brand name. Rather, it refers to a protection class in accordance with the EN 149 standard, which also recognises classes FFP1 and FFP2. FFP3 is simply the highest protection class and is used when the other mask types are no longer sufficient.
You can use the FFP3 mask for all areas of application for which FFP1 and FFP2 are also approved. However, it also provides protection in other cases. These include
- contact with bacteria, viruses and fungal spores in risk group 3
- working with asbestos and diesel soot
- Welding stainless steel
FFP masks fit close to the face and extend from the root of the nose to the chin. The filter performance is therefore significantly higher than with conventional medical face masks or simple fabric masks. The masks are designed for single use and should therefore be changed regularly, even if worn for long periods, so that the air trapped in the fabric does not impair protection. They are attached to the ears or directly to the back of the head with elasticated straps. FFP masks are available either with or without a valve for exhalation. The latter is particularly popular in the skilled trades, where exhalation does not pose a risk of infection. The FFP3 mask without a valve is just right for use in surgeries and clinics. It protects not only the wearer, but also colleagues and patients from infection with diseases.
What is the difference between FFP2 and FFP3 masks?
As a rule of thumb, the higher the number behind the abbreviation FFP, the higher the filter performance. However, this can also be measured precisely, with the results deciding which category the respective mask falls into.
The following criteria determine which FFP category a mask belongs to:
- Pollutant concentration
- Protection against risk groups
- Leakage
- Filter performance
There is a certain limit value for the concentration of harmful substances in the workplace. While FFP2 masks may be used if the workplace limit value is exceeded by a maximum of ten times, FFP3 masks are even authorised for 30-fold exceedance.
FFP2 masks provide reliable protection against harmful particles in risk group 2 based on water and oil. For substances in risk group 3, however, this only applies to FFP3 masks. These are all biological substances that can cause illness, pose a serious risk to health and spread among people. This includes, for example, carcinogenic and radioactive particles.
In addition, an FFP2 mask may have a maximum leakage rate of 8%, while 94% of the pollutants are filtered out of the air. Here too, the criteria for FFP3 masks are even stricter. They must not leak more than 2% and must reliably filter out 99% of airborne pollutants.
If you are unsure which FFP mask is required for a particular activity, you are not making a mistake by wearing an FFP3 mask. However, make absolutely sure that the mask is certified and actually complies with the FFP standard and is therefore approved for your intended use. The best way to do this is to buy your FFP3 masks in our shop.
