Altitude training or hypoxia training has long been used in competitive sports to support the improvement of performance. As altitude increases, the air pressure decreases and the number of oxygen molecules in the air we breathe is reduced. This means that the higher you are, the lower the oxygen content in the air you breathe - the air becomes "thinner". To compensate for this lower oxygen content, your breathing becomes faster and your pulse rate increases. Altitude training ensures that the body adapts to the low-oxygen air or hypoxia by increasing the production of erythrocytes (red blood cells). This is because performance increases when all cells are optimally supplied with oxygen. Hypoxia training not only offers significant benefits in competitive sport, however, significant improvements can also be seen in health promotion. Nobel Prize in Medicine for hypoxia research

In 2019, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to the three scientists William Kaelin, Gregg Semenza and Peter Ratcliffe. The scientists have discovered molecular mechanisms that enable cells to measure oxygen levels and recognise when adaptive reactions are necessary. Hypoxia in particular contributes to positive reactions that help the body to supply all organs and organ systems with sufficient oxygen.
As early as 2012, Gregg Semenza was able to document the influence of hypoxia on mitochondrial function in his publication and show that under hypoxic conditions, the autophagy of weakened mitochondria is accelerated and the formation of new mitochondria is stimulated at the same time. Various training options of the MITOVIT®

Interval hypoxia/normoxia (IHT)
The interval hypoxia/normoxia (IHT) training option makes optimum use of the hypoxia training period, as oxygen saturation quickly falls back into the training range (below 90 % Spo2) during the training phase. The disadvantage of the training option is that it takes a little longer in the recovery phase until the initial oxygen saturation in the blood is restored, which does not optimally utilise the regeneration time.

Interval hypoxia/hyperoxia (IHHT)
The interval hypoxia/hyperoxia (IHHT) training option makes optimum use of the recovery time as the initial oxygen saturation is quickly restored in the blood during the recovery phase. In the training phase, on the other hand, it can take longer for the oxygen saturation to fall back into the training range (below 90 % Spo2). This shortens the training time.

Adaptive hyperoxia
The adaptive hyperoxia training option combines the advantages of hypoxia/normoxia (IHT) and hypoxia/hyperoxia (IHHT), which means that the respective disadvantages are cancelled out. Interval hypoxia training becomes significantly more efficient and training success is increased. Adaptive hyperoxia therefore enables faster regeneration and maximises the training effect for the same amount of time.
