In the event of an accident or a life-threatening situation, first aid is the non-medical use of tools and equipment at the scene of an accident to prevent the existing situation from deteriorating. First aid can be necessary in all areas of life. It is therefore necessary to be aware of this issue and to avoid unqualified interventions.
How should first aid be administered?
The primary aim of first aid is to eliminate the life-threatening situation and ensure the continuation of the vital functions of the casualty. First aid interventions must always be carried out by a person trained in first aid. In critical moments of the race against time, first aid is of great importance, which, when used correctly and consciously, significantly minimises the consequences of injury. It is extremely important to always have a well-stocked and accessible first aid kit or a kit with sufficient supplies to deal with unforeseen situations. It is always advisable to buy a well-stocked first aid kit in good time.
Where do first aid training courses take place?
In the course of life, people may encounter situations that require first aid - both for themselves and for others. Timely and correct first aid measures can save the life of the injured person. For this reason, many institutions require a first aid licence.
Nowadays it is not difficult to obtain this certificate. Many health centres are authorised by the Ministry of Health and have the status to offer first aid training. During the first aid training, theoretical and practical training is given, after which the condition to successfully pass the required exams is sought. In addition to a first aid licence, it is also compulsory to carry this with you. In accordance with the Labour Code and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, it is a legal requirement in all public institutions and companies to only employ staff with a first aid certificate.
What are first aid rules?
The basic rules of first aid can be listed as ABC. These processes are as follows:
- Assessment of airway patency
- Assessment of breathing
- Checking the pulse
Obstruction of a person's airway, interruption of the breathing routine, stopping the heart and cessation of blood flow can cause the person to die within minutes. Therefore, these first aid rules should be followed during all interventions. So how can first aid be administered correctly?
Protection of the victim and the first aider
The intervening person should first protect themselves and the accident site. If there is a situation that poses or could pose a danger, this should be eliminated or precautions taken. Buying appropriate warning signs is more than advisable, as is purchasing a proper first aid kit.
Examples include marking the scene of the accident with suitable markings, placing an illuminated sign around the vehicle, wearing gloves to protect against infectious diseases, parking vehicles or gas sources to prevent poisoning.
Clear reporting of the situation
The first responder should report the incident in detail to the ambulance teams as soon as possible. As an ambulance is deployed for each patient and casualty, the number of people should be reported to the healthcare teams in the event of multiple casualties. Accordingly, details such as the identity of the caller and the description of the incident as well as the number of patients/injured should be communicated clearly and quickly.
Restoration of vital functions
Once the condition of the injured or ill person has been established, the first responder should calmly and quickly enter the rescue phase. If there are people on the scene who do not have first aid skills, they should never treat the patient/injured person.
