In times when stress is at the top of most people's list of priorities, people are crying out for alternatives to relieve tension. Because tension causes pain and pain is a bad way to live. By applying negative pressure to the skin through suction, small spherical glasses are said to relieve pain and improve circulation at the same time. Cupping is an alternative healing method, the effects of which have not yet been scientifically proven, but are nevertheless frequently demonstrated. Cupping and cupping massage are ancient - in ancient Greece it was even considered an art of doctors. And anything that has lasted this long cannot be bad. A distinction is made between cupping with fire and cupping with a suction ball or pump. Depending on the type of cupping, the glasses are moulded. There is dry and bloody cupping as well as cupping massage. In the following, however, we will focus exclusively on cupping glasses without a ball.
Cupping glasses without a ball
Cupping glasses can have a suction ball or be used without a ball. Cupping glasses with a ball are operated by hand and a pumping movement is created. The air inside the cup is pumped out and the cup adheres to the skin, "cupping" it. Glasses with a ball are mainly used for cupping massages. Cupping massages combine cupping and massage. During the cupping massage, the glasses are placed on the skin and the ball is pressed together, creating a vacuum that slightly lifts the skin. The cupping massage is then performed with the glasses, i.e. the glasses are carefully moved over the skin, creating a massage effect.
Medical fire cupping glasses are usually cupping glasses without a ball. This means that the vacuum to be created is generated by heat instead of suction. Both types are considered to improve circulation and relieve pain and are usually used in the back area.
When are cupping glasses without a ball used?
In principle, cupping glasses without a ball can always be used as long as someone with the necessary knowledge is performing the treatment. However, cupping glasses without a ball are particularly suitable for "dry" and "bloody" cupping. In dry cupping, the cupping glasses are placed on a specific spot on the body for up to 10 minutes and are not moved. In bloody cupping, the skin is scratched or lightly pricked before the glass is applied. The applied cupping glasses fill with blood and wound fluid due to the negative pressure created and the suction effect. They are only removed again when they are one third full.
What is fire cupping?
In this type of cupping, a vacuum is created in the cupping glass using heat instead of pumping air. The word "fire" sounds more dramatic than it is. The cupping glasses are only heated on the inside at their opening. A piece of cloth or cotton wool is usually used for this, which is soaked in ethanol and applied to the edge of the glass. The ethanol is carefully lit and the rim of the glass is heated. When the glass has reached the right temperature, it is placed on the skin as normal with the opening facing downwards. The glass cools down, creating a vacuum and the desired suction effect on the skin. Fire cupping should not be carried out by amateurs, but should always be performed by a professional. For fire cupping, the cupping glass should also be made of fireproof material, such as thick-walled glass. Thin-walled materials are not suitable as they can break quickly and cause injury.
