The middle ear is made up of three small bones: the malleus (hammer), the incus (anvil) and the stapes (stirrup). These bones transmit and amplify sounds from the eardrum to the inner ear. They are located in the tympanic cavity in the temporal bone. In their natural arrangement, they are so small that they fit on a fingernail. The ossicles are supplied in a transparent Petri dish with a matching foam insert. The ossicles can be easily removed.
