Exercise Mats for Fitness, Pilates, Yoga and More

Anyone who wants to keep fit will find an exercise mat essential. These mats are indispensable for yoga, gymnastics, floor exercises, therapy, Pilates, fitness training and other sports. When exercising on the floor, they protect you from cold and damp surfaces and provide a comfortable, non-slip base, even for bare feet. They can also ease the strain on your joints and help protect against injury. Many exercise mats are easy to carry, and some fitness mats are suitable for outdoor training. They come in different thicknesses and sizes, and can be folded, rolled up or fitted with a protective coating. Broadly speaking, there are three types: thin yoga mats, slightly thicker Pilates mats and sports mats. Yoga mats are usually less than one centimetre thick. They are designed above all to provide a secure footing and greater comfort during exercises performed barefoot. Pilates mats are generally one to one and a half centimetres thick and are also suitable for exercises performed lying down. Gymnastics mats can be up to six centimetres thick and are suitable for more dynamic activities such as floor gymnastics. However, they are less portable because they cannot be rolled up and are considerably heavier.

What Makes a Good Exercise Mat?

A good exercise mat should be flexible and comfortable, and should suit the activity for which it is intended. First consider which sport you will use your new fitness mat for and where you will use it. The mat’s thickness and size, as well as any additional features, should match those needs. Exercise mats must be large enough. A small mat is sufficient for standing exercises, but for fitness exercises performed at least partly lying down, the mat should be at least as long as your height. The right thickness depends both on the activity and its intensity, and on your personal needs. If you exercise frequently, choose a thicker and therefore more comfortable mat. The same applies if you have sensitive joints. A protective coating may be useful on uneven or rough surfaces, or if you often exercise in trainers, as it makes the mat hard-wearing and helps it last longer. In all cases, an exercise mat should be non-slip and provide a secure footing. A special anti-slip finish can help. For good hygiene, the mat should be easy to clean.

Buying an Exercise Mat for Home or the Gym

If you are buying an exercise mat for home, choose one to suit your needs. A particularly shape-retaining and therefore more comfortable version may be a good choice. Fitness mats for the gym should also be easy to carry. Some can be folded. Roll-up mats are easier to transport when secured with a strap, and lighter mats have an advantage here. AcuMax offers suitable accessories at affordable prices. For home use, hangers or stands may be useful. Mats with eyelets are easier to hang up.
