Shockwaves have been used successfully in urology for around three decades. More recently, they have also been used in modern pain therapy and trigger point treatment. The term “shockwave therapy” refers to mechanical pressure pulses used therapeutically in the human body. These pulses travel as waves and stimulate the body’s regenerative abilities in the areas being treated.
Shockwaves act on a large area of affected tissue and specifically accelerate the body’s self-healing process. They improve metabolism and increase local circulation, allowing inflamed or damaged tissue to regenerate more quickly. Painful calcium deposits in joints can also be broken down through shockwave treatment, so that over time they can be absorbed by the body and transported away via the bloodstream for excretion. Another area of application is trigger point treatment. Trigger points are thickened, sensitive areas in muscles and tendons. They are often the cause of pain that may be felt not near the trigger point itself but in other parts of the body (referred trigger points).
