Material
This product is made from virgin pulp and recycled fibres. The packaging material is made of paper or plastic. Both virgin pulp and recycled fibres are used in the tissue manufacturing process. The type of pulp used depends on the product requirements and availability. Pulp is always utilised as efficiently as possible. The environmental benefits and economic viability of recycled paper as a raw material depend on several factors: its availability, the length of transport routes and the quality of the paper collected.
Recycling paper means using resources efficiently, as the wood fibres are used more than once.
High demands are placed on the quality and purity of the recycled fibres at every point in the supply chain (collection, sorting, transport, storage, use) in order to guarantee safe and hygienic products.
Recycled paper can be made from old newspapers, magazines and office waste, for example. The choice of grade of recycled paper is made for each product, depending on the specific requirements for performance characteristics and brightness. The collected paper is dissolved in water, washed at high temperatures, treated with chemicals and analysed to remove impurities.
Fresh fibres are made from softwood or hardwood. The wood is chemically treated and/or subjected to mechanical processes to filter out the cellulose fibres and remove lignin and other residues. Bleaching is a process in which the fibres are cleaned. The aim is not only to obtain a lighter-coloured pulp, but also a material with a certain degree of purity so that it meets the requirements for hygiene products and, in some cases, food safety regulations. Nowadays, there are different methods of bleaching: elemental chlorine-free bleaching (ECF) uses chlorine dioxide, while total chlorine-free bleaching (TCF) uses ozone, oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Recycled pulp is bleached using chlorine-free bleaching agents (hydrogen peroxide and sodium dithionite).
